Signs Your Child May Have ADHD: What Parents Should Watch For

Difficulty paying attention, forgetfulness, and high energy are a normal part of childhood. However, when these behaviours are persistent and begin affecting school, home life, or friendships, they may be signs of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Common ADHD symptoms in children include difficulty staying focused, making careless mistakes, trouble following directions, poor organization, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviour. If these challenges are affecting everyday life, it may be time to speak with a healthcare provider.

According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, a comprehensive assessment can help identify a child’s needs and guide appropriate behavioural, learning, and treatment goals.

1. Difficulty Staying Focused

One of the most common child ADHD signs is difficulty sustaining attention. Children with ADHD may struggle to concentrate on homework, reading, conversations, or other activities that require focus.

You may notice your child:

  • Starts homework but struggles to finish it
  • Becomes distracted easily
  • Frequently daydreams
  • Moves quickly from one activity to another

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health explains that young people with ADHD often find it difficult to maintain attention, especially during tasks that require ongoing mental effort.

2. Frequent Careless Mistakes

Children with ADHD often know the correct answer but overlook important details. This can result in mistakes at school or during everyday activities.

Common examples include:

  • Skipping questions on homework
  • Forgetting part of an assignment
  • Making errors despite understanding the work
  • Missing important instructions

These mistakes are usually related to attention rather than a lack of ability.

3. Trouble Following Directions

Children with ADHD may have difficulty completing tasks that involve several steps because they become distracted before reaching the end.

For example, a child may be asked to put away their toys, brush their teeth, and get dressed. They may begin the first task but lose focus before completing the others.

If this happens regularly at home and school, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

4. Difficulty Staying Organized

Organization is another common challenge for children with ADHD. School supplies, homework, toys, and personal belongings may frequently go missing, even when routines are in place.

Signs may include:

  • Frequently losing backpacks, books, or pencils
  • Forgetting homework or permission forms
  • Having a messy desk or bedroom
  • Struggling to manage daily routines

According to The Canadian Paediatric Society, difficulty organizing tasks and belongings is a common symptom of ADHD in children.

5. Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

Not every child with ADHD is constantly active, but many experience hyperactive or impulsive behaviours that are difficult to control.

These behaviours may include:

  • Fidgeting or squirming
  • Leaving their seat when expected to stay seated
  • Talking excessively
  • Interrupting conversations
  • Difficulty waiting their turn

These behaviours often occur across multiple settings, including home, school, and social activities.

When Should Parents Seek Help?

Speak with a healthcare provider if your child:

  • Has shown symptoms for six months or longer
  • Experiences challenges at home and school
  • Is struggling academically
  • Has difficulty maintaining friendships
  • Finds daily routines difficult

According to the Canadian ADHD Practice Guidelines (CADDRA), if ADHD symptoms are persistent and affecting a child’s daily life, a comprehensive ADHD assessment is recommended.
